The focus is on a specific site in the western part of Iceland where the difference between high and low tides is greatest. The plan is to use so-called tidal turbines which harness the tidal current and make the use of dams unnecessary. They are also believed to have minimal impact on the environment.
Sjávarorka applied for research license in Breidafjordur in September 2009 to continue the research that began in 2001. Orkustofnun agreed on the application in January 2010. The permit, however, was limited to areas within 115 meters and Sjávarorka was not given the priority to utilization. Charges were filed because of this on February 23rd 2010.
